A Study on the Relationship between Perceptions of National Pension and the Application for National Pension among the Middle- and Old-aged: Comparisons between Male and Female
Kim Hye-Jin

Abstract
Adopting the idea of theory of planned behavior that perception of an individual is important to understanding the future behavior of the person, this study examined the relationship between perceptions of National Pension in Korea and the application for National Pension among the middle-and old aged (50 to 64 years old). In addition, this research explored if there is a gender difference in the relationship between the two factors. This study used the data from the Korean Retirement and Income study, fourth additional wave, and binary logistic regression to analyze the data. The following results were found. First, individuals who had better understanding about National Pension Scheme were more likely to apply for National Pension, suggesting that perceptions of National Pension Scheme can be a predictor of the application for the National Pension. By dividing the sample of this study into male and female, this study did not find that there is a gender difference in the relationship between the two factors. It is suggested that the education about National Pension Scheme is necessary to increase rates of the application for National Pension among the middle-and old aged in Korea. In addition, it needs to introduce policies that can lead the middle-and old aged women to have national pension credits.
